My name is Ivar Moe and I am an operator at Norsk Stein quarry, the largest in Scandinavia. It is located on the Jelsa fjords north of Stavanger in Norway.
Norsk Stein was founded in 1987 and produces high-quality granite aggregates. Up to 95 per cent of production is exported to Germany, the UK, Denmark and The Netherlands. The site is currently being expanded so that annual output will double, from five million tonnes to 10million tonnes for the next 35 years.
For the past three months, I have been operating a Hitachi ZX190W-3 wheeled excavator. It is used for transporting various materials around the site including rocks, wood, steel, pipes and chains that are used to protect wheel loader tyres from damage.
HITACHI
The ZX190W-3 was delivered in October 2008 and has 270 hours on the clock. It has been fitted with a pincer attachment, fitted by official Norwegian dealer Nanset Standard AS. It is also used with a trailer to transport large amounts of materials quickly around the site.
Norsk Stein has two additional Hitachi excavators, a ZX16 and an EX1200-5, which were also delivered in 2008. Its first Hitachi machine, an EX1800, was bought in 1998. The reliability of the EX1800 is the reason why Norsk Stein has continued to buy Hitachi machines.
Experience
I like everything about the Hitachi ZX190W-3. It is easy to manoeuvre, precise, and moves quickly around the site, even when the trailer is fully loaded.
It is extremely versatile, doing lots of different jobs around the site, and it is always working. You don’t need any other machine, especially when it is used with a trailer.
The Hitachi ZX190W-3 has a strong, sturdy structure, which provides stability and makes me feel safe. The cab is quieter than other brands of machinery I have used. I also like the responsive control levers and the comfortable seat.
