My name is Esa Mantyjärvi and I am an operator for Destia, the leading infrastructure service company in Finland. With 2,200 employees, it specialises in transport construction, excavation and mining, and works on projects all over the country.
One of the company’s current jobs is at the Talvivaara open-pit nickel mine in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland. I have been operating a Hitachi ZX470LCH-3 excavator here for two months, although I have worked as an operator for 28 years.
The machine is used to load ore and waste materials on to dump trucks after it has been loosened from the rock face by controlled explosions. The ore is then transported to on-site crushing facilities.
HITACHI
Destia’s fleet at the Talvivaara mine is made up entirely of Hitachi construction machinery. In addition to this ZX470LCH-3, there is also a ZX870LCR-3, eight EH1100 dump trucks and a ZW310 wheel loader.
The company chose Hitachi excavators and dump trucks because of its reputation for manufacturing reliable machines. Greater availability and less downtime are important to the company for meeting targets and deadlines.
Experience
The Hitachi ZX470LCH-3 is a versatile large excavator because it is also used for drilling and hammering with different attachments.
The excavator is fast, efficient and productive. I find the controls responsive and easy to use. The arm and boom operation is simple compared to other machines I’ve used throughout my career.
I enjoy working with the ZX470LCH-3 as it is quiet during operation and the cab is comfortable. Most importantly, the ZX470LCH-3 is reliable and efficient.
