My name is Marcus Juntunen and I work for Destia, the leading infrastructure service company in Finland. It specialises in road, bridge and railway construction projects, as well as mining and excavation work. The company has 2,200 employees, which rises to 2,700 in the summer, and was established over 200 years ago.
Destia works in many different quarries and mines throughout Finland. I am based at the Talvivaara open-pit nickel mine in Kainuu, eastern Finland. The work involves excavating blasted ore and waste, and loading the materials on to Hitachi EH1100 dump trucks. The ore is then transported to an on-site crusher.
HITACHI
Destia’s fleet at Talvivaara includes eight Hitachi EH1100 rigid dump trucks, two large excavators – a ZX870LCR-3 and a ZX470LCH-3 – and a ZW310 wheel loader.
Hitachi dump trucks and excavators are extremely reliable and are the best – both inside and out – for work on this site in terms of general performance. Other manufacturers offer dump trucks, of course, but Hitachi models cannot be beaten.
Experience
I have found the Hitachi EH1100 to be a reliable and efficient dump truck. I didn’t think it would be so easy to operate, but I only required one day of training before I felt confident enough to drive it. The controls are easy to use, the cab is comfortable, and I also feel safe while driving it.
This truck has only a few hundred hours on the clock – everything is so new and performance levels are high. It handles very well and manoeuvrability is excellent.
Hitachi manufactures good, tough machines that are very reliable. I think that reliability is of great importance on large-scale projects such as this.
