My name is Olli Peitokangas and I am an operator for Destia, the leading infrastructure service company in Finland. It has 2,200 employees – sometimes 2,700 in summer when job sites are most hectic – and more than 200 years of experience in the transport construction industry. It also specialises in environmental construction, excavation and mining projects.
Destia works in quarries and mines all over the country. I have been operating the ZX870LCR-3 excavator at the Talvivaara open-pit nickel mine in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland for a few months. I have worked in the construction and mining industries for eight years.
The main activity at Talvivaara is excavating and loading blasted ore and waste materials on to rigid dump trucks. The trucks transport the ore to an on-site crusher and the waste materials are taken to heaps within the Talvivaara mine.
HITACHI
Destia’s fleet at this site consists entirely of Hitachi machines. In addition to a ZX870LCR-3 excavator, there is a ZX470LCH-3 model, eight EH1100 rigid dump trucks and a ZW310 wheel loader.
The company chose Hitachi excavators and dump trucks because of its reputation for manufacturing reliable machines. Greater availability and less downtime are important to the company for meeting targets and deadlines.
Experience
I have worked with several Hitachi excavators and have always found them to be reliable and productive. The ZX870LCR-3 is durable enough to work in the toughest of conditions, especially after a blast when the rocks are loose. I think this machine would work well in all kinds of weather because of its power and stability.
I particularly like the air-conditioned cab, which makes it easier to work in long shifts.
The ZX870LCR-3 is extremely responsive and precise thanks to its excellent hydraulics. In my opinion, Hitachi construction machinery has the best hydraulics in the business!
